Private and commercial rooftop solar installations have taken an enormous amount of pressure off of Eskom’s generation division. This is predominantly during the day, but it does still allow Eskom some breathing space from their notoriously unreliable coal powered generation fleet.
This also means that more paying customers are less reliant on Eskom and that their customer base is dwindling on a daily basis. This is income that Eskom will lose permanently as more and more paying customers move away from their reliance on the parastatal.
It is estimated that there is now (conservatively) more than 4.4GW of rooftop solar installed in South Africa. What you will see is far greater regulation as government feels the pinch due to loss of income at municipal and parastatal level.
The less progressive and narrow minded municipalities are only now cottoning on to the fact that if they can harvest extra solar from existing plants and resell it at a higher price than what they purchased it for, they may hang onto some of their diminishing income stream that they are losing due to load shedding. This, along with customers transitioning to systems that are self reliantΒ and lessen the need for an Eskom connection.
Water is also fast becoming the next Eskom, years of neglect and losses means that you WILL have to look after your water security. It is a good time to be in the renewables business.
